LONDON (AP) — European Union officials worked into the late hours last week hammering out an agreement on world-leading rules meant to govern the use of artificial intelligence in the 27-nation bloc. The Artificial Intelligence Act is the latest set of regulations designed to govern technology in Europe destined to have global impact.Here’s a closer look at the AI rules:WHAT IS THE AI ACT AND HOW DOES IT WORK? The AI Act takes a “risk-based approach” to products or services that use artificial intelligence and focuses on regulating uses of AI rather than the technology. The legislation is designed to protect democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights like freedom of speech, while still encouraging investment and innovation. The riskier an AI application is, the stiffer the rules. Trial for accused Highland Park parade shooter to begin in February

CHICAGO — A judge in Lake County set a trial date Monday for the man accused of the mass shooting at the Highland Park Fourth of July Parade.Proceedings are set to begin in February 2024 and Robert Crimo III is planning to represent himself.Crimo III, who prosecutors say opened fire on crowds of people watching the parade in 2022, is facing more than 100 charges, including dozens of first-degree murder and attempted murder charges.Seven people were killed, dozens were hurt and countless others were traumatized in the shooting.Crimo III pleaded not guilty to all charges and is currently being held without bond. Father of Highland Park parade shooting suspect receives jail time, probation in guilty plea agreement Crimo's father, Robert Crimo Jr., is serving a 60-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to several counts of reckless conduct. Solis to potentially testify in Ed Burke trial as prosecution plans to rest

CHICAGO -- Prosecutors are using recordings made by ex-alderman turned FBI mole Danny Solis to make their case against the once powerful Ed Burke.Prosecutors decided months ago to not to put Solis on the stand. Burke's attorneys told the judge they will call Solis to the stand and plan to question him for hours about the recordings alone.Jurors have heard the conversation between Burke and Solis from the Spring of 2017.Prosecutors say "tuna" was business for Burke's private law firm from developers of the Old Post Office. 1 dead after vehicle hits CapMetro bus near Austin airport

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person died after a vehicle struck a CapMetro bus that stopped to pick up a passenger in southeast Austin, police shared Monday morning. The wreck happened at the bus stop on westbound State Highway 71 near Del Valle Street. Police said the crash call came to them at about 9:37 a.m. A vehicle carrying four people inside slammed into the back of the bus. According to police, paramedics from Austin-Travis County EMS took two of those people to the hospital in critical condition, and one of those people died. Police said a few people aboard the bus also got treated by paramedics on the scene. An officer told crews on the scene that some of the westbound lanes of the highway that are currently blocked due to the investigation should reopen in the next 30 minutes.
