No One Believes in Cop City. So Why Did Atlanta’s City Council Fund It?

Last week, as Atlanta was absorbing yet another piece of bad news about its snakebit proposal for a new police and fire training facility — that it would cost the public twice as much as had been discussed — MSNBC host Chris Hayes said what much of the national audience must be thinking.“I have to say, I’ve followed this story from afar and only moderately closely, but I remain mystified why Atlanta officials are just so so SO intent on building this thing,” he tweeted. The city first accepted the proposal to build the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center — Cop City in the vernacular, a $90 million, 85-acre campus just outside of the city proper — while crime was rising in 2021, but also while the wounds of the George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks protests were still healing. A multimillion-dollar police training center, in the middle of a forest, with little transparency or recourse for voters, felt like a slap in the face to people who had been marching Atlanta fl...Novak Djokovic perfect in key tiebreaker at French Open and faces No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz next

PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic, in his words, felt “quite sluggish, quite slow” for nearly two full sets against Karen Khachanov in the the French Open quarterfinals Tuesday. Afterward, Djokovic called it his worst stretch of the tournament, a fair assessment. He dropped the opening set, something he hadn’t done at Roland Garros this year. As the second went to a tiebreaker in Court Philippe Chatrier, he knew it was vital to step up his game, bring forth his best. It’s one thing to seek perfection; it’s another entirely to deliver. As if merely wanting so made it so, Djokovic did what he’s done before at crucial moments over the years en route to 22 Grand Slam titles. Managing to choose the right shot every time, managing to put each ball precisely where he intended, Djokovic threw a shutout of a tiebreaker to point himself toward what would become a 4-6, 7-6 (0), 6-2, 6-4 victory over the 11th-seeded Khachanov.Djokovic, who will meet No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in a m...Business Highlights: Solar power plan in New Jersey; Former Southwest agent charged with fraud

(AP) — Two New Jersey utilities have joined forces on a clean energy project to pump water from a reservoir to 84,000 homes and businesses. New Jersey American Water Company and NJR Clean Energy Ventures put more than 16,500 floating solar panels atop the water of a reservoir in Millburn. The power generated by those floating panels provides 95% of the electricity that the Canoe Brook Water Treatment plant requires each day. SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Sergei Bobrovsky entered the Stanley Cup Final as the hottest goaltender in hockey. He backstopped the Florida Panthers to the final by winning 11 of his last 12 games and stopping 438 of 465 shots in that span, for a 1.95 goals-against average and .942 save percentage. In two losses to the Vegas Golden Knights before being pulled midway through Game 2 Monday night, Bobrovsky has allowed eight goals in just under 87 minutes of action for a 5.52 GAA and .826 save percentage.Despite all that, and because of everything he did to get Florida through the Eastern Conference playoffs, coach Paul Maurice is expressing plenty of confidence in “Bob” moving forward into Game 3 on Thursday.“He was very, very good in Game 1,” Maurice said Tuesday before the teams flew from Las Vegas to Florida. “I thought Sergei was like our team (in Game 2): I thought we were just slightly off. We didn’t give him a chance. He didn’t, maybe, quiet the game early for us when we needed it...Trial starts for plastic surgeon accused in teen patient's death

Denver (KDVR) -- Denver has recorded rain 11 out of the last 14 days and this rainy, stormy pattern is continuing."This is unique in the sense that it has been persistent," said Greg Heavener, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder. "We keep getting these really big influxes of Gulf of Mexico moisture across eastern Colorado and once it hits the mountains to our west, it rings it out as showers and thunderstorms on an almost daily basis," Heavener said.Heavener said this keeps happening because of a blocking pattern. Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels explains. "Just like the offensive line of a football team, they are blocking because they don't want anyone to get to the quarterback. Well this high-pressure system is blocking this low-pressure system from making its way across the country and because it stops it, we don't get this low-pressure system to really move quickly and it stalls out and it stays in the same position and it stays in that rain...Police seek video of SUV in Aurora road rage killing
