Read more Letters to the Editor.Call for an end to waragainst PalestiniansThe people of Palestine have lived under Israeli occupation for 75 years and while no one condones the surprise attack by Hamas into Israel, the displacement of 2 million people, half of whom are children, living in Gaza is horrific, indefensible and cannot be condoned. The United States lending its support to Israel’s genocide of the people of Gaza must not accepted or supported. We must voice our outrage and call for the halting of military force against the people of Palestine.Rev. Few Republicans have confidence in elections any more

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 21:34:55 GMT

By Christine Fernando | Associated PressSUAMICO, Wis. — Kim Pytleski could barely sleep the night before. She replayed the PowerPoint slides in her head, packed her notebook and took a deep breath. The clerk from a rural Wisconsin county north of Green Bay was preparing for a public meeting to explain the election process to residents. She didn’t know who she would encounter. Would some deny the results of the last presidential election? Would the conversation get combative? Most importantly, would she get through to anyone? They were questions Pytleski never expected to ask herself when she started the job in Oconto County more than 14 years ago. But since then, election conspiracy theories have taken root in the rural, heavily Republican county in northeastern Wisconsin. It’s among large swaths of the country where distrust of voting and ballot-counting, fanned by former President Donald Trump’s false claims of a stolen election, maintains a stubborn grasp.Pytleski...

Jim Jordan appeared Monday to be shoring up support to become U.S. House speaker, winning over reluctant Republicans who have few options left two weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s ouster. One by one, Jordan, the hard-charging Judiciary Committee chairman, has been peeling off detractors who view the Ohio Republican as too extreme. A major pressure campaign from Trump allies including Steve Bannon and Fox News’ Sean Hannity has helped quickly build support. Tuesday’s scheduled floor vote could turn into a showdown.“I feel real good about the momentum we have,” Jordan said outside his office in Washington.Ahead of a private GOP meeting Monday evening, Jordan took a cooperative tone vowing to “bring all Republicans together” if he becomes House speaker after the ouster of McCarthy.“The country and our conference cannot afford us ...

Key injuries and poor execution doom the 49ers in their first loss of the season

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 21:34:55 GMT

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco’s high-powered offense that seemed unstoppable to begin the season looked awfully pedestrian after losing two key playmakers in a game against Cleveland’s stellar defense. With Deebo Samuel missing most of the game with a shoulder injury and Christian McCaffrey sidelined for most of the second half with an injured oblique and rib, the 49ers struggled to move the ball for most of the second half in a 19-17 loss to the Browns on Sunday.“Any time you lose real good players like that, it’s a challenge,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “But that’s stuff you’ve got to go through. That’s part of football. I just thought we made too many mistakes, missed assignments and stuff that happened.”San Francisco (5-1) had scored at least 30 points in each of the first five games, but didn’t come close to that against the Browns.Five of the Niners’ first six drives after halftime netted no yards and no fir...
