Karen Read defense: Problematic investigation into John O’Keefe death grabs federal attention

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:11:58 GMT

Among the many fireworks at the most recent hearing in the case of Karen Read, charged with killing her boyfriend John O’Keefe last year, is the defense’s claim that the investigation is so troubled that the federal government has opened up a case to look into it.“It’s been reported that federal authorities have now gotten involved in the circumstances surrounding this case and have impaneled a grand jury, federal grand jury, to investigate some of these circumstances,” defense attorney Alan Jackson said in Norfolk Superior Court Wednesday afternoon.“But Karen Read should not have to wait for the feds to figure out which heads should roll.”A day later, the feds didn’t have much to say to clarify the matter. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s office said: “We do not confirm or deny investigations.” The FBI had the same answer, “as a matter of longstanding policy.”The case has brought about significant public attention — from both sides — which filled the second-f...

Families looking for the ideal launchpad to summer fun on Cape Cod should add 17 Teneycke Hill Road in North Falmouth to their must-see list. The spacious contemporary Cape, built in 1996, has gone through a spiffy renovation. It’s now a pristine, turnkey home that’s a few minutes from fun on Buzzards Bay. While it’s not on the waterfront, the property’s proximity to popular Old Silver Beach and Chapoquoit Beach and the fact that it abuts an idyllic, thickly wooded lot is a pretty sweet deal.In addition to receiving recent updates, the home’s layout is optimal for hosting family and friends. Coming in at more than 3,100 square feet and three floors, there are multiple rooms where everyone can gather for a game night or a movie night by the fire. This same layout allows everyone to splinter off when together time has run its course for the day.For example, the main floor features a living room with a fireplace that’s just off the kitchen, a family room with a warm, wood paneled coffer...

‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3’ a Marvel-ous winner

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:11:58 GMT

MOVIE REVIEW“Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3”Rated PG-13. At the AMC Boston Common, AMC South Bay and suburban theaters.Grade: A-When that first “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014) film hit our shores, it was a cyclonic breath of fresh air after nine previous Marvel films. The incredibly popular Marvel superhero films had become turgid, repetitive bores. Superheroes destroyed cities, often in dark, ugly 3D, gathered together to whine and moan and then destroyed more cities before finally saving the world. But the “Guardians” were something else entirely. Peter Quill aka “Star-Lord” was a wise-cracking, mischievous, rebellious boy-man kidnapped from Earth when he was a child. His mother was dead. He missed his beloved grandfather. Peter was another Peter Pan and all the villains were versions of Captain Hook. Plus, he had the Awesome Love Mixtape Vol. 1 that his mother had made. This was a stroke of genius on the part of Troma Studios graduate, rock and roller and writer-director James G...

Celtics’ Grant Williams proves ready for bigger role with Joel Embiid back for 76ers

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:11:58 GMT

When Grant Williams checked into Wednesday’s Game 2 with 5:09 left in the first quarter, Joel Embiid was heading to the bench at the same time. But when Embiid returned with 1:05 to go, Williams had a message for the 76ers star and newly-minted NBA MVP.“For me, it’s just a matter of trying to make them work,” the Celtics forward said. “That’s what I basically said to him. I’m here to make you frustrated and continue to make this hard for you every single night.”Williams backed up his word. He didn’t give Embiid an inch of space, pressing up against the big man – who hovered over him by about six inches – like an irritant, though that backfired on their first play matched up together. Embiid caught a pass at the top of the key and when he felt a slight bump from Williams, exaggerated the contact and went crashing to the floor. Williams was whistled for a foul and stood there for a moment in some disbelief. But that play was an outlier for Williams, who had his best o...

Remembering when the Matignon High boys hockey team ruled the state

Marty Pierce thought it was only fitting to attend his granddaughter’s high school softball game Wednesday afternoon, supporting her during a tough time.Mount Alvernia faced the St. Joseph Prep/Matignon co-op, in which the latter joined the other two on Tuesday as announced Catholic schools that would close at the end of the academic year. Enrollment has been low, and Matignon is shutting down due to a lack of funding. It’s natural for the iconic former Matignon boys hockey head coach to be affected by the news, having orchestrated a dominant 40-year run that produced 10 state championships and 20 league titles. The program was nationally regarded as a juggernaut from the 1970s through the early ’90s. He can still describe with great detail the many moments that defined the historic stretch before he retired in 2004, and along with it, the many big names that came through the program before playing Div. 1 collegiate hockey. Many also advanced to the NHL.“I was shocked that they...
