D’Andre Swift takes center stage with 175 yards rushing and bails out Jalen Hurts and the Eagles

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Eagles had a pretty good running back in Miles Sanders. Sanders was steady, durable and even rushed for more than 1,200 yards and scored 11 touchdowns in a season that ended in the Super Bowl. But in the modern NFL, a good running back is as disposable as a cheap razor. It’s a pass-first, quarterback-driven league these days.So much so that elite running backs griped when teams this past offseason refused to give them the lucrative long-term contracts players such as the Giants’ Saquon Barkley thought they deserved. When Carolina offered Sanders a deal with $13 million in guaranteed money, the Eagles said, thanks for the memories, and let him loose. D’Andre Swift was available, after all, and the Eagles (2-0) were able to sign him for less than half the guaranteed money the Panthers are paying Sanders.Running behind a line anchored by Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson, the big men up front opened lanes as they always do, and Swift bailed out the Eagles on a ni...Connecticut alderman facing charges in Jan. 6 riot defeats incumbent GOP mayor after primary recount

An alderman facing criminal charges that he entered the U.S. Capitol with a mob of rioters on Jan. 6, 2021, has narrowly won the Republican mayoral primary in Connecticut’s smallest city following a recount on Friday.Gino DiGiovanni Jr. defeated three-term Mayor Richard Dziekan in the race in Derby, a city of 12,400 people about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of New York City.Following the recount, DiGiovanni retained the 10-vote lead he had after an initial ballot count in Tuesday’s primary, out of just under 400 cast. Races decided by less than 20 votes trigger an automatic recount. After the recount results were announced, he told reporters he thought the national attention being paid to his candidacy because of the federal charges will ultimately prove beneficial to Derby, especially when it comes to seeking state and federal grant money.“This is the first time in Derby’s history that this race is on a national scale. So I’ll take that, you know, any day of the week,” h...Authorities link 3 men arrested in Miami to boat equipment theft in Pompano Beach

By DAVID SHARP, ROBERT F. BUTAKY and PATRICK WHITTLE (Associated Press)BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — Fishermen removed lobster traps from the water and residents hauled hundreds of boats ashore — leaving some harbors looking like ghost towns — while utility workers from as far away as Tennessee began taking up positions Friday ahead of Hurricane Lee’s heavy winds, high seas and rain spanning hundreds of miles (kilometers) of land and sea.The storm is projected to be more than 400 miles (640 kilometers) wide with tropical-storm-force winds when it reaches land, creating worries of power outages in Maine, the nation’s most heavily forested state, where the ground is saturated and trees are weakened from heavy summer rains.Lee remained a hurricane with 80 mph (128 kph) winds Friday afternoon as it headed toward New England and eastern Canada with 20-foot (6-meter) ocean swells, strong winds and rain. Forecasters said there would be winds topping 40 mph (64 kph)...Patriots-Dolphins injury report: Mac Jones has 4 OL questionable for Sunday Night Football

Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 18:16:24 GMT
BOSTON (AP) — When it comes to hurricanes, New England can’t compete with Florida or the Caribbean. But scientists said Friday that the arrival of storms like Hurricane Lee this weekend could become more common in the region as the planet warms, including in places such as the Gulf of Maine. One recent study found climate change could result in hurricanes expanding their reach more often into mid-latitude regions, which includes New York, Boston and even Beijing. Factors in this, the study found, are the warmer sea surface temperatures in these regions and the shifting and weakening of the jet streams — strong bands of air currents that encircle the planet in both hemispheres. “These jet stream changes combined with the warmer ocean temperatures are making the mid latitude more favorable to hurricanes,” Joshua Studholme, a Yale University physicist and l ead author on the study. “Ultimately meaning that these regions are likely to see more storm formation, intensification and pe...Latest news
