$1.37M to help with childcare costs in Travis County

Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN Live’s top headlines for Sept. 26, 2023.TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — On Tuesday, Travis County commissioners voted to continue a partnership with United Way for Greater Austin to expand childcare access in the county for two years. The $1.37 million contract extension will help childcare centers and home-based providers for families with low to moderate income in Travis County. RELATED: Child care in Travis County is the most expensive in Texas, new data show Previously, county commissioners approved an October 2022 contract for about $979,000. The Tuesday vote is a continuation of the program. This money comes at a time when over 300,000 kids in Texas are at risk of losing their childcare, according to The Century Foundation. On Saturday, funding from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act will expire, which will end financial help for childcare providers. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The man accused of videotaping women in Saratoga Springs was arrested on Tuesday after reportedly turning himself in. SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Schenectady man was sentenced to six years in federal prison on Tuesday for receiving hundreds of images and videos of child pornography. Daniel Quintero, 38, pleaded guilty to charges in May. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Quintero admitted that from May 1, 2019, to March 2, 2022, he downloaded images and videos of child pornography. The DOJ says he downloaded the content onto multiple electronic devices and a cloud storage account. Quintero is set to serve ten years of supervised release once his prison sentence is over. He was ordered to surrender four electronic devices he used to commit his crimes and will pay $9,000 in restitution to three victims. ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - The demolition of Jamestown Mall begins Tuesday. It's been an eyesore and safety hazard for years. Jamestown Mall opened in 1973. It was forced to close down in 2014 after years of challenges. The demolition process began Tuesday morning.Our Bommarito Automotive Group SkyFOX helicopter flew over Jamestown Mall on Monday.The St. Louis County Port Authority has accepted a bid from 'Target Contractors LLC,' based in South Carolina, for the demolition of the property.
