Library requests funding increase to address shortfalls since pandemic By Erika MathieuSunny South NewsThe Picture Butte Library Board has requested a significant funding increase to the Town’s annual contribution during the Sept. 11 regular town council meeting.As the board develops its 2023-2025 plan for service, Manager of the Picture Butte Public Library, Cheryl Garratt, said it has been hard to keep up with the expected level of service under current budgetary constraints.The delegation revealed over 5,000 people passed through the doors of the Picture Butte Public Library in 2022; a far cry from being an under-utilized resource in the community.Garratt presented council with a copy of the library’s current budget, revenue, and expenses which shows since the onset of COVID-19 in 2020, the library has been unable to break even. In 2020 and 2021, the library was over-budget its annual budget by $13,000 each year, and over $10,000 in 2022. Man pleads guilty in fatal Interstate 70 road rage shooting The man who shot and killed someone during a road rage incident on Interstate 70 near North Quebec Street in 2022 is pleading guilty to second-degree murder, the Denver District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.Jameel James, 18, was accused of shooting Kevin Piaskowski, 31, while driving a stolen truck westbound on I-70 the evening of July 31, 2022. Gasoline prices in California edged higher again on Tuesday, hitting an average of $5.84 per gallon - a little over a penny more than Monday’s average, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).Drivers in metro Los Angeles are paying an average of $6.14/gallon, nearly 80 cents more than a month ago and 30 cents more than a year ago as gas prices tread dangerously close to L.A.'s all-time record of $6.50/gallon from October 2022.For comparison, drivers in southern states such as Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina and Alabama only pay around $3.30/gallon.So why are gas prices spiking now?
