ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Amid broad debate about French language’s place in France’s former African colonies, Algeria is denying that efforts to force Francophone private schools to adopt the country’s national curriculum constitute hostility toward French.Education Minister Abdelkrim Belabed said that no languages were being “targeted” in Algeria and noted that multilingualism was among the education system’s major achievements.“All languages are welcome,” he said Saturday..Algeria has more French speakers than all but two nations — France itself and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nearly 15 million people out of the country’s population of 44 million speak it, according to the International Organization of the French Language. GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei has threatened to crack down on pro-democracy demonstrations in which activists have blocked roads since early last week in support of President-elect Bernardo Arévalo.Protesters are demanding an end to what they see as political persecution by prosecutors of Arévalo, who is due to take office in January but whose political party has been suspended on prosecutors’ allegations of voter registration fraud. Arévalo, who has vowed to root out corruption, has described that and other cases brought against him as an attempted coup. Giammattei said in a taped message late Monday that he would arrest the protest leaders, who he claimed were funded and advised by foreigners. Giammattei’s remarks were the strongest attack yet on the protests, which he accused of damaging the economy and causing “vandalism.” The comments suggested the president was firmly in support of his U.S.-sanctioned attorney general. “We are requesting...Deion Sanders talks 1st Pac-12 win of the season

Boston, Massachusetts (CNN) — Though home to the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park is known for being green. It’s hard not to associate the two, considering the “Green Monster,” the stadium’s massive outfield wall that has towered over the field since it opened in 1912. The ballpark and its famed wall are painted in a unique shade of green that was even offered to the public by US paint company Benjamin Moore. But perhaps surprising to most is another green aspect of the iconic baseball venue. Spanning a section of what was once an empty black rubber roof, a farm is making Fenway green in a completely different way.On any given day, farmers from Green City Growers plant harvest and maintain the roughly 5,000-square-foot rooftop garden area called Fenway Farms, tucked up on the third floor behind the third baseline. With 2,400 total square feet of growing space, the beds can cultivate anything from A to Z – “asparagus to zucchini,” says Chris Grallert, president of Green City Growe...Why you should start your holiday shopping early

The New England Patriots defense is in a tough spot. The unit is already playing without two of its best players in pass rusher Matthew Judon and rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez, and with the offense managing only three points over the last two games it has to feel at times like even a perfect game might not be enough. That type of situation could naturally breed resentment within the locker room, but members of the coaching staff said Tuesday they aren’t worried about the defense pointing fingers, even while acknowledging that it can happen in the NFL.“No, not really. I was kind of brought by my dad and my grandpa like, ‘Get your get your (expletive) together yourself.’ Like, don’t be worried about the rest of the people in the room,” said linebackers coach Steve Belichick. “If you just worry about yourself and do what you need to do, and lead people in the way of doing what you need to do better — there’s always corrections that ...Latest news
