A defeat at the Colorado Supreme Court last month has forced the Gaylord Rockies Resort to pay years-old tax bills totaling $87 million that it had been disputing since opening. The massive hotel near Denver International Airport is the largest taxpayer in Adams County. It opened in 2018 and was sent a property tax bill of $25.3 million the next year. The hotel’s owner, Nashville-based Ryman Hospitality Properties, took issue with that. It claimed that the county had wrongly valued it at $676 million rather than $270 million due to a flawed methodology that includes income from restaurants and shops in a hotel’s value. The Gaylord appealed its 2019 tax bill to the county’s board of equalization, the Colorado Board of Assessment Appeals and the Colorado Court of Appeals. It lost every time. Then, in October, it asked the Colorado Supreme Court to take up its case.“The Gaylord is not one ball of undifferentiated wax,” it wrote. “It is a complex property containing mixed assets which gener...Steve Konowalchuk returns to Avalanche organization as Eagles associate head coach

The onset of August brings two exciting celestial events involving full moons, the first of which will play out Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in Denver. It will be the first of two so-called “supermoons,” which are full moons that coincide with the lunar orb’s closest approaches to Earth in a given year, making them appear slightly larger than normal. And, when there are two full moons in the same month, the second is called a blue moon. That will occur Aug. 30.According to TimeandDate.com, a respected astronomy data site that focuses on cycles of the moon and sun, the last time there was a super blue moon was in 2009, and the next one will occur in 2032. Supermoons appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter relative to “micromoons” at the other extreme.Related ArticlesOutdoors | First solar eclipse in six years tops list of the best celestial events you can see in Colorado in 2023 Outdoors | If you want the best view of October’...Broncos coach Sean Payton feels for “tough-minded” WR Tim Patrick after Achilles tear, surgery date TBD

Broncos coach Sean Payton on Tuesday confirmed receiver Tim Patrick sustained a “clean” tear of his left Achilles during Monday’s practice.Payton said the surgery date has not yet been set, but that he spoke with Patrick on Monday night and offered what little consolation he could.“Of course he’s disappointed,” Payton said. “The hard thing is for a player who spent most of his offseason rehabbing and to all of a sudden hit another road block. He sounded better last night. He’s tough-minded. He’s a real good leader.”Dr. Kenneth Jung, an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, told The Post that, while Achilles injuries are difficult to rehabilitate from, most athletes today do successfully.“There’s newer protocols now where we’re definitely accelerating rehab,” Jung said. “It’s somewhere between six and nine months.”Jung said the most difficult part of coming back is the atrophy in the calf muscle before athletes can really dial u...As gas prices soar across the country, Denver surpasses national average by 16 cents
