Opinion: 50 years later, the story is the same

When I read the Salt Lake Tribune editorial on July 2, my heart sank. A Utah man with severe mental illness had died in a poorly regulated care home, with a mere $8,000 fine levied against the managers. The editorial was fierce: “It doesn’t seem to matter how horrible the care … how many of these residents live in filth and squalor … the responsible authorities apparently make little to no effort to whip the homes into shape or, failing that, shut them.”In 1976, my disabled brother, Mike Trimble, died in just such a care home, in Denver. I’ve spent a decade researching his life and death for my book, “The Mike File,” and I know well the details and politics of his death.Mike left home after turning 14 when his diagnosis — “paranoid schizophrenia, capable of violence” — shattered our family. A court committed him to the Colorado State Hospital in 1957. He never lived at home again. When mental hospitals emptied their wards a decade later, Mike was mainstreamed back to Denve...Kiszla vs. Gabriel: Is there a legit No. 1 passing target in Broncos’ snakebit receiving corps?

Kiz: What does that snake have against the Broncos, and why does it keep taking a bite out of the team’s receiving corps? Without contact, Tim Patrick went down in a heap Monday during training camp and it didn’t look good, with fear of an Achilles injury. That’s four years in a row that injury has taken a serious bite out of a wide receiver room that’s the highest-paid in the NFL. For all that money, do the Broncos have a legit No. 1 passing target for quarterback Russell Wilson?Gabriel: They might in Jerry Jeudy, who is not on the list of players who have been knocked out for an entire season but who has missed time in his career with ankle issues (six games in 2021, almost three full games in 2022). But we’ve yet to see the 2020 first-round draft pick really put it together. The finishing kick last year (523 yards and five touchdowns over the final five games) was enticing enough that the Broncos picked up his fifth-year option for 2024 at a guaranteed $12...‘That’s all I wanted’: How U.S. soccer stars had the support to thrive as moms

Kevin Baxter | Los Angeles Times (TNS)The little girl didn’t care that her mother had just lost an important game. She didn’t care about the league table, the Golden Boot race or the San Diego Wave’s long winless streak either. None of that matters when you’re 3 years old.“She wants to kick the ball around, she wants to score a goal with mommy and wants to wave to the fans,” Alex Morgan said of her postgame routine with daughter Charlie, one that has added important perspective to an unparalleled career now in its twilight. “I have to forget about everything that’s happened and just enjoy being mom because I know that this isn’t going to last forever.”Morgan and fellow national team starters Crystal Dunn and Julie Ertz have given birth since the U.S. won its last World Cup four years ago, giving this summer’s roster a record three soccer moms. And all three said motherhood has changed the way they view the game as they chase another title this summer in New Ze...Bears keep taking dips in Los Angeles area pools (video)

For the third time in less than a week, a Los Angeles area resident captured video of a bear in their pool.Ed Afsharian shared video with KTLA, which showed another instance of the growing trend of bears trying to beat the heat by taking a dip in a backyard pool. The video shows a mother bear and a cub playfully swimming around in a pool at a home in the foothills of La Cañada Flintridge, about 15 miles north of downtown L.A. Just last week, a similar video in the same city showed a mother bear and a cub splashing around in a hot tub. A mother bear and her cub were seen splashing around in a backyard pool in La Canada on July 31, 2023. (Ed Afsharian)While both videos feature a mother bear and a cub, and both were taken in La Cañada, it's unclear if it's the same bear and cub as seen in Monday's video. Nearby in the city of Burbank, another bear was seen cooling off in a hot tub in a backyard last Friday. Video shared by the Burbank Police Department showed the bear sitting upright in...Even in a heatwave, are most offices too chilly?

The current heatwave in Southern California and across the country has placed enormous stress on power grids -- and on workplace cooling systems. This raises an interesting question: Do we overcool offices? If your workplace is like mine, it's common to see some employees -- mostly women -- wearing sweaters or covering themselves with blankets even though outside temperatures may be in triple digits. What's up with that?Jacking up the AC is actually something that goes back decades, to when air conditioning became standard in most office buildings in the 1950s.Salvatore Basile, author of "Cool: How Air Conditioning Changed Everything," says building owners tended to "overcool" offices just to show they could do it."One building exhibitor published an advertisement stating that people got sick after spending time in his air conditioning, just to prove how cold his building was," he told CNN.The tendency to overcool has persisted over the years, with one common explanation being that thi...Corona High School students restore classic Jeep for family who lost father
