Theodore J. Kaczynski, the so-called Unabomber, who attacked academics, businesspeople and random civilians with homemade bombs from 1978 to 1995, killing three people and injuring 23 with the stated goal of bringing about the collapse of the modern social order — a violent spree that ended after what was often described as the longest and most costly search in American history — died Saturday in a federal prison medical center in Butner, North Carolina. He was 81.A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said Kaczynski was found unresponsive in his cell early in the morning. The cause of death was not immediately known.Kaczynski traced a path that was singular in American life: lonely boy genius to Harvard-trained star of pure mathematics to rural recluse to notorious murderer to imprisoned extremist. In the public eye, he fused a rare mix of styles of violence: the periodic targeting of the demented serial killer and the ideological fanaticism of the terrorist. After he was c...

ISTANBUL (AP) — The Champions League final on Saturday in Turkey is the biggest test of UEFA’s operations for major cup finals since the chaotic and near-fatal title game in Paris last year.Just five weeks ago, UEFA detailed an overhaul of its big-game management after being widely blamed in a scathing report in February into security failures at Stade de France when Real Madrid played Liverpool last year.In Istanbul on Saturday, UEFA’s changes seemed to be working on a warm, bustling but calm day as Manchester City and Inter Milan fans traveled from the city center to the 72,000-seat Atatürk Olympic Stadium in the western suburbs. The journey of about 25-kilometers (15 miles) took more than two hours for some fans amid the bustling traffic, but supporters arriving at the stadium reported no serious issues 75 minutes before kickoff. At one checkpoint, a cluster of national flags had been confiscated from fans. But police working at ticket and bag checks at the north end of the stadiu...

Their stars have been starry in their first finals appearance. Their role players have delivered. There hasn’t been a colossal blunder. And even on the cusp of a title, they refuse to change their approach.“We need to win one more,” two-time MVP Nikola Jokic said. That’s the Nuggets. Simple. Effective. Blunt. With Jokic and Jamal Murray leading the way, and with basically a different person stepping up to be the third hero every night so far for the Nuggets, they have the Miami Heat in serious trouble now.
