The return of Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee is a boon for US gymnastics. It’s created a logjam, too

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Joscelyn Roberson’s always had her eye on the 2024 Olympics. The math just sort of worked. The Texan is going to be 18 next summer, an age long considered an athletic sweet spot for elite female gymnasts, at least in the United States. Each of the six American women to become the Olympic all-around champion — from Mary Lou Retton in 1984 to Simone Biles in 2016 to Sunisa Lee in Tokyo in 2021 — were teenagers when gold medals were placed around their necks. So yeah, Roberson watched the end of the pandemic-delayed 2020 games and let her mind wander to what may loom for her in Paris. She knew she’d be old enough to compete. She figured a significant portion of the 2020 women’s team would move on to the next phase of their lives, ceding the spotlight to the next wave of elites. For quadrennium after quadrennium, that’s typically how things worked. Not in 2023.When Roberson walks onto the floor at the SAP Center on Friday night in the opening ...General Motors to close information technology center near Phoenix and eliminate 940 jobs

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it will close a large computer center near Phoenix at the end of October, eliminating 940 jobs. The information technology center in Chandler, Arizona, opened in 2014 as part of a blitz by GM to attract software designers and other employees in metro areas with high numbers of technical workers.Similar centers in Warren, Michigan, near Detroit, suburban Atlanta, and in Austin, Texas, will remain open. The Arizona center has just over 1,000 workers now, and most of the eliminated jobs deal with information technology support for consumers, dealers and the company itself. Employees at the other three IT centers will take over that work, GM said Wednesday. A small number of employees working on software for vehicles will stay in Arizona, spokesman Kevin Kelly said. Laid-off workers will be able to apply for other positions in the company, he said. Some will get severance pay and outplacement services.Last week GM also eliminated about 200 engineering po...FBC Glance

The Netherlands is expected to name Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra as its next European commissioner after the departure of climate czar Frans Timmermans, two people familiar with the government’s thinking told POLITICO.Hoekstra, whose government is headed for elections in November, would fill the role recently vacated by Timmermans who announced in July he was returning to national politics. The Commission said earlier this week Maroš Šefčovič would be taking over Timmermans’ duties as executive vice president, including oversight of the European Green Deal’s rollout. But that may leave open the climate action file, which could now pass into the hands of Hoekstra for the final year of this Commission’s term, one of the people aware of the decision said. The choice of who gets the climate action file is ultimately up to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who could select another commissioner.Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s government is expected to f...Man accused of murdering, dismembering roommate arrested in Cambridge

A man accused of murdering and dismembering his roommate in Indiana in 2017 was arrested in Cambridge Thursday, the Massachusetts State Police announced.State police said state, local and federal authorities took John Hallett, 54, into custody at his apartment on Chester Street Thursday morning, years after state police said he allegedly choked his roommate and struck the roommate with a blunt object. After killing his roommate, state police said, Hallett allegedly disemboweled the roommate’s body and disposed of the remains in various public trash cans. While investigating, Massachusetts State Police said, local investigators in Michigan City, Indiana deployed a cadaver dog which tipped them off to the scent of human remains in the basement of the residence where Hallet and his roommate had lived. Police said authorities later obtained an arrest warrant for a murder charge against Hallett after evidence “confirmed the presence of decomposing matter in the basement.”S...Student Hails “Life-Changing” New Free Community College Program

Fighting back tears, incoming MassBay Community College interior design student Danita Mends recounted on campus Thursday how she had to drop out of college and enter the workforce in the early 2000s due to financial setbacks. In corporate America, Mends found she was “hitting ceilings” and “being overlooked constantly” for opportunities. Mends made the decision to return to school, but she ran into more financial obstacles as she became pregnant and had a son.The latest disruption to her higher education journey is coming to a close due to the launch of a state-funded free community college program, called MassReconnect.“I got called and was told that I was eligible for this program, which is going to be life-changing for me,” said Mends, who attended Needham Public Schools, at a press conference in Wellesley. “It’s been a long road and to have this financial burden lifted is amazing. And I’m excited for the opportunities that ar...Latest news
