PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers will have to find a way forward without Kwon Alexander. The veteran inside linebacker’s season is likely over with what coach Mike Tomlin called a “serious” left leg injury sustained in the first quarter of a 23-19 win over Green Bay.Alexander, who had thrived in Pittsburgh after signing a one-year deal with the Steelers in July, was dropping into coverage when he fell to the ground. He was able to walk off the field under his own power but was quickly taken to the locker room for testing and ruled out.Tomlin said Alexander was being evaluated but added that it was “not promising.”The nine-year veteran had meshed quickly with Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts, the three becoming essentially interchangeable while splitting snaps relatively evenly. Holcomb’s season ended last week when he sustained a knee injury in a win over Tennessee. Alexander will now join Holcomb on injured reserve, meaning two of Pittsburgh’s top five ta...

Government shutdown risk looms again

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 19:17:31 GMT

The U.S. still faces a risk of a government shutdown at the end of this week despite a new compromise plan by Speaker Mike Johnson that leaves out hardline conservative priorities like cutting spending and curtailing migration.A shutdown would threaten a downward U.S. credit rating adjustment by Moody’s Investors Service, which has cited political dysfunction as a growing risk to bond investors. A federal funding lapse would also have political repercussions for both parties.Congress has just days to pass a new stopgap bill before funding runs out after Nov. 17. Johnson on Sunday suggested his plan would buy lawmakers time to negotiate individual spending bills, which fiscal conservatives have demanded.“Washington’s spending addiction cannot be broken overnight,” he said on the social media site X. “But I will not allow end of year megabus spending packages to continue under my leadership.”Johnson’s plan could still run aground in the face of combined resistance from GOP conservativ...

A FRENCH ARMY BASE, France (AP) — Battle cries pierce the smoke and rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire as Ukrainian soldiers fight through and take enemy trenches and dugouts that hide gruesome, bloody remains.“Grenade!” one screams in Ukrainian. Another yells: “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!” This time, no lives or limbs were lost. Because this time, the rounds fired were blanks and the “enemy” troops were, in fact, French soldiers whose intention was not to kill the Ukrainians but instead to help shape them into better, more lethal warriors. But soon, the war games these troops played in the mud in France will become all too real, when the Ukrainians return home and are sent to the front lines against Russia’s forces. As the Russian invasion grinds into a second winter and casualties — already estimated in the hundreds of thousands — continue to mount on both sides, combat training programs provided by Ukraine’s allies are helping it hold out and its odds of e...
