CU Buffs opponent preview: TCU aims to prove 2022 wasn’t a fluke Prior to last year, his first at TCU, Sonny Dykes had enough of a track record as a head coach to show a pattern.Dykes’ first three head coaching stops included a not-so-good first year, followed by success in later years. Last year, Dykes broke out of that pattern in a big way. Taking over what had been a mediocre TCU program, Dykes stunned everybody by leading the Horned Frogs to the national title game. The Horned Frogs went 13-2, tying a school record for wins and becoming the first Big 12 team to win a College Football Playoff game. Despite a narrow loss to Baylor in the Big 12 title game, they reached the CFP semifinals and knocked off Michigan before getting blown out by Georgia, 65-7, in the title game. This summer, BuffZone will preview each of Colorado’s opponents for the 2023 season and in this first installment, we look at TCU. On Sept. 2, the Buffs will visit the Horned Frogs, who are trying to prove last year wasn’t a fluke.“The transition for Sonny Dykes from having zer...

But the the first of only three hits he allowed over six innings came around to score and proved to be the only run for the first eight innings of a 3-0 Giants win, improving to 13-2 over their past 15 games and 10-0 away from home this month.Brandon Belt nearly did in his former team, doubling in the eighth to put the tying run on second base with two outs, but the Giants (45-34) called on Camilo Doval, who got World Baseball Classic teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to fly out to end the threat and shut the door in the ninth, recording his National League-leading 23rd save.In his first game against his old club, Belt struck out twice and flew out to center before b...

A big contract went to a San Jose private school run by the mayor’s wife. Was it competitive? A city contract worth nearly $1 million was awarded to a San Jose private high school run by the mayor’s wife, with officials assuring that it went through the routine competitive bidding process, though leaders at other schools say they weren’t aware of the opportunity. The deal raised eyebrows at the June 20 City Council meeting after Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School nabbed the contract. City officials, meanwhile, insisted they performed the proper outreach to numerous schools in the city so that everyone had a fair shot. The private school, they contended, was the only one that applied for the funding for the work-study program at City Hall for high school students. But officials at two area public school districts now say they were never made aware of the opportunity, raising questions about how Cristo Rey San Jose, whose president and CEO is Silvia Scandar Mahan — Mayor Matt Mahan’s wife — secured the program’s five-year contract worth $86...
