How can Deion Sanders, CU Buffs push for Big 12 title and College Football Playoff in 2024? More steak, less sizzle.

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 05:31:58 GMT

BOULDER — Do you believe now?Honestly? When it comes to Deion Sanders and his CU Buffs football program, that depends.Do you believe in Shedeur Sanders? Without a doubt. Do you believe in Travis Hunter? Twice on Sundays, where he’s gonna make a killing.Do you believe in the coaching staff? In the offensive line? In a defense that became a punch line on “Saturday Night Live?” Not so much. The glass is half … something. Compared to 1-11 and a national afterthought a year ago, the Buffs are clearly on a better path. But after a 3-0 start turned into 4-8, there’s still a long, long, long way to go.Which begs the question: Is there enough time on Coach Prime’s internal clock — always ticking — to get there, as soon as next fall?“What Deion has proven in Year 1 is that it’s possible,” former Buffs football coach and CBS Sports football analyst Rick Neuheisel told The Denver Post earlier this month. “It’s been a t...

California’s sober home rules headed to another courtroom showdown

Gorsuch, Brett M. Kavanaugh, and Ketanji Brown Jackson.(Fred Schilling, Collection of the Supreme Court of the United States) Who’s really disabled? Who really deserves protection under anti-discrimination laws? Those are the questions Costa Mesa urged the the U.S. Supreme Court to ponder as the city battles on, defending its sober living home rules against lawsuits from irate operators. Wisdom on this from the Supremes could have crystalized squishy matters of law and, as the city sees it, saved people’s lives. But last week, the Supremes declined to take up those questions, sending the whole matter back to square one — to federal court for trial on the merits. It’s a bit of a bummer for the city, and somewhat encouraging for the operators, but by no means suggests the city won’t prevail...

California has no accredited Native American colleges. That could change.

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 05:31:58 GMT

It has been a generation since California had an accredited tribal college serving the state’s Native American residents. An Inland Empire college is trying to change that.“We have more than 1.4 million American Indians living in California,” said Celeste Townsend, president of California Indian Nations College. “And yet not one (accredited) tribal college.”Compare that to Oklahoma — the state has one-third the Native population of California but three tribal colleges.“There’s something wrong there,” Townsend said. “We’re going to be changing that.”Attendees of the Gathering Under the Stars event were greeted by several vendors selling Native American jewelry, clothing, and other items at the Gathering Under the Stars event at California Indian Nations College in Palm Desert on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023. Liz Weston: Companies’ deceptive ‘dark patterns’ online cost you money — here’s how to fight back

See if any of this sounds familiar:● You can’t find an easy way to cancel an unwanted subscription, so you let it continue for another month — telling yourself you’ll try again later.● You feel rushed into an online purchase you regret, but there’s no option to undo the transaction or demand a refund.● You want to read an article or shop at a store online, but you’re bombarded with pop-up requests for your data. There’s no easy option for saying no, so you click “allow” just to get the annoying pop-up out of the way. These are just a few examples of “dark patterns” — intentionally deceptive designs that companies use to steer people into making choices that aren’t in the consumers’ best interest.Dark patterns may sound like a feature of sketchy websites, but these manipulative practices are a common way mainstream companies dupe people into sacrificing their privacy or paying for stuff they don’t really want.Buttons that allow sites to scoop up and sell your data may be prominent, wh...
