Melvin Carter Jr. is more than just the St. Paul mayor’s father. This child of the Rondo neighborhood has led a very interesting life, a story of redemption that’s led a St. Paul kid with a propensity for getting into trouble to become a man devoted to getting St. Paul kids out of trouble.Along the way, he was a street fighter, a sailor, a police officer and a linchpin leader in his community. And such an engaging storyteller that his 2019 autobiography from the Minnesota Historical Society Press, “Diesel Heart,” has found an enthusiastic audience. Now Brian Grandison has adapted that book into a play. “Diesel Heart” premiered this past weekend at History Theatre, and it’s a show that works better as history than as theater. While it’s often engaging — especially when one of its 20-some vignettes stretches into something that seems like a turning point — I found myself wishing that it sounded more like Melvin Carter. For he is indeed a man full of charm and charisma who ne...For the second summer in a row, the Basilica Block Party has been called off

The Basilica Block Party is on hold once again. The annual outdoor music festival did not take place in 2022 and it won’t happen this summer, either.“We are considering it on hiatus,” said Mae Desaire, director of marketing and communications for the Basilica of St. Mary. “We’re reconsidering for 2024.”When asked for more details, Desaire said, “We’re reconsidering and leaving it at that for now.”Founded in 1995 as a fundraiser to help pay for structural restoration of the Basilica of St. Mary in downtown Minneapolis, the Basilica Block Party was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. Ticket sales suffered and the festival drew about half its pre-pandemic attendance.Organizers announced 2022 was off the table that February. “Live events have had to rethink their strategy and future b...Book review: Sex, Secrets and Absent Fathers: It’s the New John Irving, of Course

An awful lot happens to Adam Brewster, the protagonist of John Irving’s new novel, “The Last Chairlift.” Indeed, it would hardly be an Irving novel if it weren’t stuffed — sometimes overstuffed, like one of those sofas with the springs coming out at odd angles. But the main event is probably when Adam’s athletic, unmarried mother, Rachel “Little Ray” Brewster, straddles him, age 13, in bed, presses his shoulders down to the mattress and gives him the kind of “lawless” kiss she’s just planted on a prospective new boyfriend. In a page or two, Adam — named for the Bible’s first man, narrating in the first person — rapid-shuffles through all the conflicted feelings of an incest victim: curiosity, fright, confusion, indignation, loyalty. Then the thrilling and anxious descent into secrecy. “When you keep secrets from people you love, you don’t sleep as soundly as a child,” says Adam, a novelist, screenwriter and close contemporary of Irving, who himself has told of being sexually abused by ...Student exchange program forges bonds through generations
