While Twins wait for injured players, rookies helping team stay above water

Baseball fans get excited when a rookie comes up and produces at the plate, of course. But sometimes their play in the field is the best indicator of how ready they are for the big leagues. It’s the split-second-decision making that tells you they’re not bowed by pressure.Edouardo Julien and Matt Wallner did a little of both in the Twins’ 7-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday at Target Field.Julien started the game with an opposite-field home run off Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafini, and Wallner, an outfielder from Forest Lake with a big arm and bat, doubled in a run for a 2-1 lead in the second. But each also made important defensive plays in the second inning when the Giants were close to tying the score. In right field with one out, Wallner charged a shallow liner and threw a bullet home to keep Lamonte Wade Jr. from attempting to score the tying run with one out in the first inning. In the second inning, Julien, a second baseman with a potent bat, threw...Lineup announced for Guilderland summer concert series

Americans are getting to know Gov. Ron DeSantis as he mounts a bid for the White House. Now, they’ll have to figure out how to pronounce his last name. He’s gone back and forth between Dee-Santis and Deh-Santis over the years. In his presidential campaign launch ad on Wednesday night, he introduced himself as Dee-Santis, but in a follow-up video just a little later he went by the other one.The DeSantis campaign did not immediately respond to an inquiry Thursday into the preferred pronunciation. But the Dee-Santis or Deh-Santis question — albeit a trivial one — has prompted puzzlement for several years in Florida politics. As of late, it’s captured the attention of DeSantis’ political rival former President Donald Trump, who shared a Twitter post and video of the 44-year-old governor pronouncing his name differently. Twitter user “johnny maga” asked in the post, “Who changes the pronunciation of their own last name in their 40’s? Is there anything genuine about this guy?”Storms bring h...Letters: Jeers for Lakers’ Lebron; tears for Broncos’ McManus

The King of sore losersNo question, the Nuggets are the best in the West. But No. 6 for the Los Angeles Lakers needs to go to learn better sportsmanship.Without a doubt, the King is one of the greatest of all time, but as a gracious loser and role model for being a good sport, he earns a 0 on his jersey. The King did not stay on the floor at the finish of the game as his teammates did, congratulating fellow players.Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus would shake hands, as did Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio; tennis greats meet at the net; and Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes looked for each other at the end of the game.I believe I made my point that the King should change his name to Le Baby. King, grow up. There will always be room for one more loser.Jay Weinstein, DenverMcManus kicked to the curb too soonRe: “McManus announces the end to nine-year career in Denver,” May 24 sports storyI think the Broncos are going to regret letting Brandon McManus go. Crime has hurt our community and our national reputation. And Denver voters should know before election day that two of the candidates for City Council have supported defunding or even abolishing the police, while a third candidate effectively tried to do the same with RTD’s police.Three years ago, Denver was ranked number two in the US News and World Report’s annual “Best Places to Live” survey. In its most recent survey released this past week, Denver fell from 55th to 99th among 150 cities. An obvious factor in Denver’s precipitous fall from the top: crime rates. Denver is listed as the 15th most dangerous place to live in its survey. Let that sink in.Denver is ranked third in motor vehicle theft crime rates and sixth in property crime rates. Current data from the Denver Police Department’s website shows that over a 3-year average, violent crime is up almost 15%, with murders up by 11.5%. We also know that fentanyl cases filed by the Denver District Attorney have doubled ev...Broncos running back Javonte Williams participates in OTAs
